The Alliance for Astronomy, Inc. is a non-profit corporation organized to enhance the educational resources for science, math, engineering, and technology in St. Charles County and the surrounding region. It uses the almost universal human interest in astronomy to foster greater interest and study of math and science. The Alliance sponsors the Astronomical Society of Eastern Missouri (ASEM) as its main outreach effort. ASEM holds regular monthly meetings at the Astronomy Center at Weldon Spring for beginning and more advanced amateur astronomers. ASEM also provides public opportunities to view the skies with telescopes, especially in St. Charles county parks (usually Broemmelsiek and Klondike) and at school, scout, and other gatherings. ASEM membership is open to all and ASEM meetings are always open to the public and free.
The Alliance believes that science and the arts are interconnected and have participated in the Arts Council’s Arts Happening for Kids in February 2008 and will co-host the Van Gogh, Galileo, and Friends: Arts and Science in Klondike Park on Saturday, October 17, 2009. The two groups retain membership in each other’s organizations and support each other in various endeavors. An Alliance member, Gregg Ruppel, has had his digital photography of the moon, planets, constellations, and solar systems on display and for sale at the Lillian Yahn Gallery.
This is the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope as a scientific instrument to study the heavens. Join in a star party this summer and fall – May 30, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17. Please visit the web sites for more information at www.ASEMonline.org or www.st-charles-astro.org
